‘Look into the mirror who’s inside there, the one with the long hair, same old me again today’. This song (Unpretty by TLC) came on the radio the other day, and despite having listened to it on numerous occasions, I honestly felt every lyric and even had a little cry at the end. For me, it hit home about how insecure I can feel at times; insecure about my image, my life and what people think.
This isn’t because of a particular person, or my presence on social media, it’s me being my own worst critic, and battling with those nagging voices telling me I’m not good enough. And I know I’m not alone when feeling like this.
According to a recent study, 75% of young girls suffer with low self-esteem. We are living in a society where we are constantly striving to better ourselves; to look prettier, to be smarter, to have a desirable lifestyle – the list goes on.
I wish I had a quick fix on how to overcome these internal insecurities, and how to stop the act of comparison. The best I can really do is to remind you that you are not alone when feeling like this. And without giving a lecture on psychoanalytic theory, it is completely normal, or even part of being human that makes us hardwired to be constantly seeking a ‘better self”.
A daily reminder
To encourage more self-love, especially during Valentine’s month, Abbott Lyon are sending out inspiring quotes to their customers, and I couldn’t have wished to be part of a better campaign.
I’ve got this message pinned to my mirror to give a gentle reminder not to be so hard on myself, and I honestly couldn’t recommend doing this enough. Such a simple message can be so impactful, and it’s a great way to start your day off by giving yourself a big self-love hug!
Please please, try and be kinder to yourself. Remember how beautiful and how loved you are. And remember you are not alone if you’re feeling insecure or suffering with low self-esteem. Sometimes simply talking about how you feel with someone you trust, can make such a big difference.
