Created by hairstylist Jen Atkin – who’s responsible for maintaining the locks of the Kardashians, Bella Hadid and Jessica Alba (just to name a few) – Ouai has become one of the hottest haircare brands out there right now. And as someone who struggles to tame their long, frizzy locks I decided to put some of their products to the test.
I’ve become very mindful when choosing paraben and sulphate free products, so the first step was ensuring Ouai could offer just that. And good news – Jen promises her brand only offers the right stuff as she claims, ‘In short; no matter how good a product works or smells, potentially harmful ingredients are not cool’. Instead, she uses only natural texture-building copolymers (ingredients that provide the ‘hold factor’) such as seed extracts and volcanic minerals – as well as no chemical preservatives.
When opting for the right product to suit my haircare needs, I decided to try the Ouai Thick Hair Shampoo and Conditioner. Ouai also offers products for fine hair and medium hair. If you’re unsure of your hair type, you can take their haircare quiz – nice touch!
At £22 each for a 300ml bottle of shampoo and conditioner, I was hoping the products did not disappointment…
Tried and tested
Upon arrival, the sleek packaging oozes modern luxury, and it’s clear to see why the brand has that desirable Instagrammable factor. For the first time ever, I was actually looking forward to ‘hair wash day’. When pouring the shampoo, the pearlescent formula felt smooth and rich. And just a small amount went a long way. It also contains naturally nourishing ingredients including marshmallow root, shea butter and avocado oil.
The creamy conditioner was also generous with its portions and glided seamlessly over the hair. I combed it through with my fingers, and immediately noticed a more manageable wash. The conditioner also boasts marshmallow root and shea butter, as well as the go-to protein keratin. This has been hydrolyzed (broken down) to penetrate deeper into the hair’s cuticle.
When drying my hair that’s when the frizz normally kicks in, and I usually pile on three different smoothing creams and oil. However, I refrained from my usual tricks to see if the Thick Hair Shampoo and Conditioner really lived up to the promise of salon-worthy results.
Despite the pretty hefty price tag, I was thrilled with the instant results. My hair was visibly smoother, softer and considerably less frizzy! It had a gorgeous magnolia and citrus scent, and my locks were looking cleaner and healthier than ever. It’s quite rare to find a product that provides an instant transformation. But I can say in full confidence that the Ouai brand is not a case of attractive marketing with no substance – it genuinely is that good.
Of course, I can’t speak on behalf of the full range, but if you have long unmanageable locks, I would urge you to give Ouai Thick Hair a try. As well as impressive results, I was extremely pleased with their offer of refill pouches, which keep your bottles topped up using 60% less plastic.
I love hearing from you, so please let me know if you’ve also tried Ouai!

I recently wrote a blog post on why I’ve started to opt for vegan beauty products after noticing a significant improvement in my skin. On my quest for natural and cleaner ingredients, I’ve also started to learn more of the benefits of choosing paraben-free. Despite the ability to increase a product’s shelf life, parabens can […]
